Oh my god I love this place. To set the record straight, the best french dip in the world is Cole's in downtown Los Angeles, and has been for 100+ years. But this place is a VERY close second, and the best you'll find for over 1000 miles. I've been here several times and I can't say I've had anything other than the french dip. It was so good, it's all I've ordered all the other times I've gone. The little music venue is super fun on a Friday or Saturday night. Come a little early to score a booth, eat and drink, then dance and listen to music as it fills in with people.
Super great place. -

Sally Struthers and her parents ate here in 1979. They LOVED all the food. How do I know? I was the lucky guy who got to wash their dishes, they were nearly licked clean!
If you are a Sally Struthers fan, ask for the Sally Struthers booth! Current management probably knows nothing about what happened in 1979 and definitely don't know they have a Sally S Booth. But I can tell you the Sally Struthers booth is the first booth on the right as go down the first isle of the dining room.
Oh...and I ate there recently and the food was great! -

Under new ownership (Alex Bond of Serratto and Saint Cupcake) the food, music and cleanliness has all definitely improved! The menu is still a mix of 50s & 60s era dishes like beef stroganoff, oysters Rockefeller, and King Louie salad, with some new offerings like a kale & apple salad and Ahi poke. Prime Rib is still the name of the game and it shows up everywhere: as prime tidbits with horseradish sauce during HH, in a French dip sandwich, as a cold sandwich, and of course as the star of dinner served with mashed potatoes and veggies.
There are plenty of seafood, salad and chicken options for those not into prime rib, but we were definitely there for the dry aged prime. It did not disappoint. The very thick slice was cooked perfectly medium rare, and was oh, so flavorful. The mashed potatoes with au jus (we requested) were on point as well. Veggies over cooked.
The atmosphere and decor remains the exact same but feels cleaner, even has a scent of bleach, but in a good way. The restaurant is still dark with circular booths but there is now a patio out front so you can enjoy your meal in bright sunshine, a first!
The lounge is just as it's always been, red walls and half circle red leather banquets that shout 50s Mafia or Tony Soprano. There are several wooden tables and chairs plus stools around the bar too. There are 4 video poker machines on the side of the bar. Seriously.
The improved food quality is most important; second is Clyde's now has live music every single night, not just weekends. They post the calendar on their website and the list of Jazz, R&B and Blues bands is impressive. Music starts at 9 and goes until 12:00-12:30. When the band finishes, the people all disappear instantaneously. Poof, like a magic act. Everyone in the lounge, gone. I always wonder where they go? Years ago the crowd would magically appear in mass at The Candlelight. But now...I think most are there for the music, drinking water, so when the music is done, so are they.
We went to see the Norman Sylvester Band last night and they are fantastic. Saw them at the Mississippi Street Fair several times and I now seek them out, they are that good. They perform at Clyde's on the last Friday of the month and draw a fun crowd. Last night they played their rendition of Bruno Mars Uptown Funk and had everyone on their feet.
The crowd is diverse: all ages, races, dancing skills! Lots of plaid, lots of hats. Some look like they could have been extras on a 70s sitcom. All good, all fun.
I used to go to Clyde's a few times a year but when it morphed into a characetuer of itself, I stopped coming. Last night's dinner at the bar and the music/dancing was a turning point. The improvements were noticeable and appreciated. Will definitely be frequenting again. -

Came here twice in a week while I was in town for work. Not sure how locals feel about this place, but for an out-of-towner looking to unwind, it was a perfect fit.
First night I came here for dinner and ended up staying to watch some live music. I had the prime rib - I thought it was delicious as were the mashed potatoes that I paired with it.
Second night I came for appetizers and then stayed for live music and to hang out with friends.
Everyone was nice, the music was good, and the environment was very relaxed. It was nice to see people dancing and having a good time (although I'm not sure if that annoyed the bands).
Will definitely be back next time I'm in town.
